New mobile ticketing options available from Miami-Dade Transit starting today

The Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) announces the launch of a new, state-of-the-art mobile app for transit riders: EASY Pay. The application will allow passengers to purchase a fare ticket via their smartphone and activate it in order to ride the Metrobus or tap into Metrorail stations at the barcode reader-equipped fare gate.

“An important benefit of introducing the EASY Pay app is that we’re offering our passengers options,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “The app is simple to use, convenient for riders, and it’s the latest technology out there for mobile payments.”

Riders can download the free mobile application via their smartphone by searching “EASY Pay Miami” in the App Store or Google Play. During this first stage of the year-long project, users will only be able to purchase a 1-Day Pass ($5.65). More features will be added next year.

This new mobile ticketing feature is only one component of an infrastructure update to our fare collection system. Eventually, the full upgrade will enable Miami-Dade Transit to communicate with other transportation agencies — such as Broward County Transit, TriRail, or even ride-share and bike-share companies — for more seamless travel countywide. The modernization also includes a cloud-based system that will allow your mobile device to become a digital EASY Card, thus offering another option to riders in addition to paper tickets and plastic cards. Just tap and ride.

“These efforts will place Miami-Dade County at the forefront of this type of technology in the United States,” said Alice N. Bravo, P.E., Director of DTPW. “We envision that this new way of fare collection will encourage new riders to give transit a try and make riding more convenient and seamless for our current patrons.”

The application was developed in partnership with Cubic Transportation Systems, a global company dedicated to intelligent travel solutions, and by Passport, a national leader in mobile payment technology.

“It’s exciting to be part of the transformation that will take the EASY Card system to the next level in customer convenience with easier, faster options,” said Matt Cole, President, Cubic Transportation Systems. “The mobile app is the first step of many that will modernize Miami’s transit system with the latest in state-of-the-art payment, security, and mobile technologies.”

“Mobile technology is transforming public transportation: Making it easier for riders to plan their trip, track their options, and buy their fare,” said Bob Youakim, CEO at Passport. “It’s also allowing transit agencies to better connect with their communities by providing rich data, effective communication channels, and a feedback loop for continuous innovation. We’re happy to be a part of it with Cubic and Miami-Dade County.”
