Luis Almagro and Lenín Moreno mourn the death of former President Alan García

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, and the President of Ecuador, Lenin Moreno, today lamented the death of former Peruvian President Alan García (1985-1990 and 2006-2011), but avoided positioning themselves on the circumstances of his death.

In statements to the press, Almagro wanted to express his “condolences” for the death of Garcia and compared him with Uruguayan ex-president Julio María Sanguinetti.

“Definitely a reference in the politics of the continent for so many years, I was the only former president with a very particular political validity, together with the former president Sanguinetti, of that post-transition transition generation, so my pain and my expression of condolences,” he said. Moreno, who spoke today before the Permanent Council of the OAS, also expressed his sadness at the death of Garcia, who lost his life Wednesday in a hospital in Lima while he was operated on by a shot in the head that was inflicted when he was going to be arrested for alleged corruption offenses.

“We did,” Moreno said, “very good friendship with President Alan García. I have rarely seen a person with such clear intelligence and such a fluid rhetorical capacity, without a doubt we will miss him, especially the Peruvian brothers who could enjoy precisely of that way of being of ex-President García “.

Asked about the circumstances of his death, Moreno said: “Sometimes it can be an advantage to choose the way to do it, it is not always a disadvantage, everyone chooses the way to live and also the way to die.”

Peruvian society and the Aprista Party, which Garcia still led, are shocked by the death of the former president, who shot himself before being arrested for the Odebrecht case.

Alan García was being investigated by the Peruvian Prosecutor for the bribes that the construction company Odebrecht paid to senior officials of his second government to obtain the award to build Line 1 of the Lima Metro and whose indications of the beneficiaries pointed directly to the exmandatario.

The Odebrecht case involves the millionaire bribes that the Brazilian company paid in a dozen countries in Latin America, including Peru.
